Bowen State High School takes pride in supporting students at all levels of reading ability. Our dedicated staff exhibit a passionate belief that all students have the ability to read, given the right instruction, using explicit teaching strategies in a safe, structured learning environment. Currently, students from grades seven to eleven work hard in intensive reading classes, concentrating on the fundamental elements enabling reading fluency. Our reading teachers and tutors identify each individual students reading age through multiple sources, to develop a program of instruction at the level and pace required for maximum growth. Early identification and intervention of our year seven and eight students has promoted accelerated growth enabling an early return to the standard curriculum instruction.
Following the delivery of the “Back on the Right Track” reading program, students not meeting the reading age requirement on completion are supported further in a specialised 1:1 tutoring program focussing on aspects previously missed.
The results of this program in 2014 were;
- 96% of year eight students have improved their reading age according to the “Probe” reading and decoding test
- 89% by one year or more
- 61% by 2 years or more
- 28% by three years or more
- The highest improvement in reading age was more than 6 years.
